Structural engineering, civil solutions, project consultancy

One core service, delivered on every project since 2015, and two that grow out of it for owners who need engineering help beyond the drawings.

01

Structural engineering

From the first structural scheme on the architect’s concept to the last good for construction drawing, and the site query that follows it.

  • Structural schemes and feasibility input at concept stage: column grids and spans, floor systems, where transfer beams or a transfer slab may be needed, basement and podium options, the likely foundation type from the soil report, and what each choice means for cost and for the architecture.
  • Analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures in ETABS, STAAD.Pro and RCDC: gravity, wind and earthquake loads to IS 875 and IS 1893, member design to IS 456, ductile detailing to IS 13920.
  • Structural drawings: foundation layout, column schedule, beam and slab reinforcement, staircase, lift core and water tank details, working drawings through to the good for construction set, with every revision recorded.
  • Design Basis Reports and calculation packages for proof checking and for institutional and municipal submissions.
  • Proof engineering: independent review of designs and drawings prepared by others, with a written report and recommendations.
  • Engineering coordination with the architect, the electrical, plumbing, fire and HVAC consultants, the site engineer, the contractor and the owner.
  • Site engineering support: resolving execution problems, checking reinforcement before a pour when asked, and site visits when required.

How a project runs

  1. Enquiry: architectural drawings, the brief, and the soil report if one exists
  2. Scheme options and our view on the framing
  3. Fee proposal, appointment, advance
  4. Analysis and design; Design Basis Report
  5. Foundation layout and column schedule, so the site can start
  6. Beam and slab reinforcement drawings, floor by floor
  7. Coordination with services and revisions as the architecture settles
  8. Good for construction set, proof check package if required
  9. Site support through construction, and a record set at the end
02

Civil solutions

Civil engineering work around the structure, done by the same team with the same standard of documentation.

  • Structural audits and stability assessment of existing buildings: visual survey, review of the original drawings where they exist, and a written report
  • Repair, retrofit and strengthening design for distressed or altered structures
  • Water retaining structures: overhead and underground tanks, designed for crack control to IS 3370
  • Retaining walls, compound walls and other site development structures
  • Quantity estimates and bar bending schedules, as an additional service

We take on these services where we have the relevant experience and the capacity to do them properly, and each one is scoped in the fee proposal.

03

Project consultancy

Advice and coordination for owners who do not have an engineer of their own.

  • Early stage structural and cost advice, before an architect is appointed: what the site and the brief allow, what the ground is likely to need, and roughly what it will take to build.
  • Structural coordination lead across the architect, the services consultants, the contractor and the site, a role we already play on every project we design.
  • Technical advisor on the owner’s side, for hospitals, colleges, trusts and industrial owners: reviewing the contractor’s structural submissions, managing the proof check, and technical due diligence on land or an existing building before it is bought or extended.
